Baptism by Fire
It must be a record, it being only April and Heather & I making it out to ride together again. This time we decided mountain biking was in order, and chose Batchelor Street as the spot.
If you are local to western Mass and into mtn biking you know what you’re getting into with Batchelor Street. It’s some of the best mtn biking around, with trails that rise and fall, twist and turn, all with sharp heavy rocks, roots, water hazards, and the occasional downed tree blocking passage. It’s great riding, but not for beginners, and certainly it’s a lot to chew on for a first ride of the season.
We spent more than 2 hrs in the woods in the Holyoke Range, getting lost and out of breath on a bright sunny day. At one point, we noticed a group of 4 turkey vultures circling us above, and we wondered if that should be cause for concern. We motored on.
At the end of the ride I attempted a jump I had no business doing. I was having a good ride and was a little high from it. I crashed, royally, with only .5m to our cars. I think Heather deemed it “you tube worthy.” Which is about as good as you can get. Minimal blood loss, some bruising, and a good story to retell over a beer…this was a perfect ride!
